Not all fireflies glow. Disappointing. Imagine being a firefly that doesn’t glow? Two years as a maggot to then spend 3 weeks as an adult, only to find out that your bum doesn't illuminate? Just awful. But those that do glow with a cold light which happens to be the most efficient in the world, meaning that 100% of the energy produced is given off as light. Firefly larvae are carnivorous, and enjoy snails, and of those that continue being carnivorous as adults, they just switch to other fireflies. Charming. They also do something called ‘reflex bleeding’ when attacked, meaning they spray toxic blood about the place so other animals don’t eat them. You know when people ask you to list things that you’re grateful for? Insects being tiny is right up there.
