Since moving to the countryside and regularly being visited by house spiders the size of small vehicles, I have been trying to learn to love them. ‘Oh, isn’t she cute?’ I will whimper to my 3 year old daughter, ‘Yes that’s right, she might eat all the flies. It depends how hungry she is after eating the face of her lover’. Have I successfully avoided passing on my phobia? Possibly, but it has done absolutely nothing to stop the internal screaming when I am ever surprised by one.
